Bear's Paw

Bear's Paw gives every bedroom its own bathroom, then adds what most barndo plans leave out: an attached two car garage with a workshop and a real mudroom. Step in off the covered front porch and the whole front of the house opens up at once. Living, dining and kitchen share one long room, 19 feet deep, with an island that seats four and a walk-in pantry off the kitchen. The primary suite anchors the left corner with a walk-in closet, a double vanity, a walk-in shower and a private toilet room. Bedrooms two and three line the back wall, each with a full bath of its own. A powder room, a home office and a laundry room round out the inside. Come home through the garage, drop boots in the mudroom, and walk through the laundry straight to the kitchen. The garage wing also holds a mechanical room and a workshop about 14 by 7 feet. Outside it is warm farmhouse: board and batten, a brick wainscot, cedar posts on brick piers and a standing seam metal roof. Good to know: there is no foyer, the bedrooms are not split, and the workshop is a room in the garage, not a separate shop bay.

Bear's Paw is drawn at a 38 foot clear span and 76 feet long, which puts 2,052 square feet of heated living beside 96 square feet of shop under the same roof line. The shop is treated as a real room here, not leftover space: 0 overhead doors, 10 foot side walls, and a 8:12 pitch that keeps the ridge at 22.5 feet.

The structure is post frame, so the load path is simple and the interior walls are mostly partitions. That matters when you want to move a wall later, and it matters when a framing crew prices the shell. 3 bedrooms and 3.5 baths sit on one level, with 2 garage bays.
